Dog stairs – how to make them yourself?
It takes approx. 4 minutes to read this article

It doesn’t matter if the steps are prepared for a puppy or an adult dog of small size, they should be sturdy and well made. Making such a piece of furniture can be fun and rewarding. Here are some practical tips.

Dog platform – how to make it?

Thanks to dog stairs our pet will avoid unnecessary injuries and will get exactly where he wants, for example to the sofa

What do you need to prepare?

  • a pencil,
  • wood glue,
  • a tape measure or a ruler,
  • a tape measure or a ruler,
  • a circular saw,
  • hammer,
  • nails (preferably 2.5 and 3.5 cm each).

The most universal will be boards with these values:

  • upper supporting board with dimensions – 2.5 cm thick x 64 cm long x 10 cm high;
  • bottom support board measuring – 2.5 cm x 64 cm x 43.8 cm;
  • 12 plywood boards measuring – 2.5 cm x 3.8 cm x 14 cm;
  • horizontal treads measuring – 2,5 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm (3 boards);
  • front of stairs measuring – 2,5 cm x 30 cm x 14 cm (3 boards);
  • side walls – 1.3 cm x 61 cm x 43.8 cm (2 boards).

How to make dog steps – step by step

  1. We begin by preparing the side walls of the stairs. Place a side board of appropriate size on an even surface. Choose one corner, which will be the bottom front. On this side, measure a 15-centimeter section and mark it.
  2. Now let’s deal with the bottom left corner, which is 15 cm below the previously marked point. Now determine the diagonal to the opposite side. From the upper right corner, measure 20 cm and mark this point. Using a ruler, connect the two marked points.
  3. Transfer the board to a stable table and fix it with wood clamps. Use a circular saw to cut on one side of the marked line. This process should be repeated with the second board, which will form the opposite side wall of the stairs.
  4. Next, we’ll do the installation of the supports for the stair treads. You will need plywood and wood glue. Start at the bottom left corner of the side wall, measure 1.9 cm from its edge. Then glue the plywood in this place.
  5. Next plywood should be glued perpendicularly to the top edge of the first one. In the place where the plywood ends, mark a point. It will be useful for gluing the parallel plywood. You need to glue them in such a way that the plywood does not protrude beyond the surface of the board. This process needs to be done with 3 more plywood.
  6. There will be gaps between the plywoods – in this place we glue the 3 remaining plywoods, so that the staircase pattern will be created. In a properly constructed structure, a 1.9 cm gap will remain on the right side
  7. To check the level of each board, you will need a protractor. Using 2.5 cm long nails, nail the plywood to the side wall of the stairs. Of course, the process should be repeated on the other side wall as well.
  8. Now we move to the last stage – nailing the steps. First, take the board that will be the front of the stairs and glue it to the plywood. Repeat this step so that you have full steps. Next, attach the boards to the plywood on the other side wall.
  9. The horizontal planks, which will act as steps, should be attached to the vertical fronts.
  10. Finally, install the board supporting the back of the construction. These elements should be fixed with 3.2 cm long nails.

Steps can also be secured from the bottom with felt, so that they move more easily and do not scratch the floor.
